WHAT IS MEDICARE?
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Different parts help cover specific services:
- PART A (Hospital Insurance) covers inpatient hospital stays, a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. Part A has no premium.
- PART B (Medical Insurance) covers certain doctors visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventative services. Part B has a premium of $104.90
- PART C (Medicare Advantage Plans) is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A & Part B benefits.
- Part D (prescription drug coverage) Part D adds prescription coverage to original Medicare. These plans are offered by private Insurance Companies approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer prescription drug coverage.
YOUR MEDICARE OPTIONS
Original Medicare doesn’t cover 100% of the cost for services; there are gaps in coverage. You will need to decide how to fill in those gaps. Original Medicare will cover 80% which leaves you responsible for 20% coinsurance and deductibles.
Once you are eligible for your Medicare Part A & B there are 3 main ways to get your coverage:
- Original Medicare plus a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plus purchase a separate Part D (prescription drug plan). These types of plans each require a monthly premium, however you are not limited to a certain Medical Group, you can see any doctor that accepts Medicare.
- Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) combines Part A, Part B and Part D. They may also come with some Dental, Vision, Hearing, Fitness and over the counter benefits. These plans may be an affordable way to go however their premiums, benefits and copays vary based on your area.
